Skulls, Bones and Unicorns

Hard times, limp solutions

August 21st, 2008 by Christopher

While well-established acts like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails readily offer new material either for free or for “what-you-feel-it’s-worth,” such a sales model doesn’t particularly bode well for unknown acts that haven’t established themselves. Yet, this hasn’t stopped bands from taking the plunge into the new age of internet accessibility, making their music available to everyone regardless of their status or lack thereof. Even unsigned acts are getting into the freebee game hoping that word of mouth will ultimately translate into success. And boy does it piss off the more established acts who remain cantankerous in regards to file-sharing and such.

The problem is that you have to actually possess great material and an original voice for people to care about what you have to offer. Enter DeZeption, an unsigned Futurepop (remember Futurepop?) act from Denmark that has decided to offer up their self-released debut album, Human Eyes, for free. In addition, if you feel that their music is actually worth something you can make a sympathy donation or order a physical copy of the CD for, ummm…12 Danish Kroner.

Okay, I know fuck-all about international exchange rates but as far as I can gather from the internet, when I type in 12 followed by Danish Krone it translates into 2.3773 US dollars. The website claims that postage and handling are included in this cost. And you though the US Dollar was weak?!

Well, before you run to DeZeption’s website to download the album let me make you aware that their music is boring, uninspired, wholly unoriginal and just plain dull…which I suppose goes hand in hand with boring but hey, I figured it could use a little overstatement. It even manages to make well-known Futurepop look exciting. The ten cuts on this release are standard by-the-numbers Synth Pop undeserving of the time I’ve spent writing up this post. Essentially, it’s like staring at Ronan Harris’ flaccid penis for 44 minutes. And I’m not sure there are enough VNV fangirls left who would be willing to even bother with that.

DeZeption get +2 points for adventurousness but -44 for being lame. Those of you playing the home game can do the math and decide for yourselves.

I tried giving it a fair chance. I agree with you it’s very boring. We call this synth-pop… they love this shit in east-europe more then drinking.

Though to give them credit, I think having a etip-jar, is a relatively good idea.

Giving away your album for free… not such a good idea — it gives it the guise of being less valuable (desirable?).

Yeah, I tried to listen to that a few weeks ago. . . couldn’t even get through it.

    It’s almost *Mythically* boring.

Haven’t heard the music, but the cover design is cheesy as hell.

(Are you sure that isn’t a Euro symbol? 12 Euros is more in line with what a CD oughta cost.)

Anyway, I went looking for some links/clips to check them out, but the only way to hear them is to download the WHOLE FRIGGIN ZIP.

Sorry, they need a better sales pitch to motivate me into dedicating THAT MUCH time, bandwidth, and disk space to listen to their music.
