Song Of The Syrenn

December 14th, 2009 by Christopher

SYRENNSo Philadelphia’s Syrenn just inked a deal with machineKUNT Records to release a proper debut. If you head on over to the MySpace page linked above you can get a taste of her style, touted in the press release as being a cross between Garbage and NIN. I hear neither. It’s more a watered down version of Kindneythieves, really, with minimal guitar. More Synth Pop than any sort of “Industrial.” But, to be fair, the quality of her recordings thus far haven’t shown much promise (at least, from what I’ve heard). She does have an appealing voice and has tapped the talents of Jaws from MyParasites on synths and Brittany Bordella of Bordella’s Prose on guitar. It might be of interest to hear what comes from all this.

The press release also talked up her “legendary” live shows so I decided to peruse the YouTube for proof. I would advise against that. What I found looked like it was recorded at a basement party and included sloppy transitions and so-so performances. I’m reserving judgment, of course, since most YouTube posts of live performances are complete horseshit and probably do the majority of live acts more of a disservice than otherwise.

In any case you should at least check her out and decide for yourself. Might be something you’re into. Might not be. If it ain’t then just chalk it up as another disappointment from a Monday.

Stave off the judgement of Syrenn live til you can experience it sans Youtube. I don’t make the 2 hr drive to Philly for her shows for no reason. If this ‘synth pop’ can hold the attention of a bar full of punkers…well, the rest goes without saying.

If you know anything about press releases, they help contribute to the promotion of the band. This goes for every musician of every genre. They help bring in new and curious listeners to check out what the band is all about. It obviously worked on you.
I also agree with you on the fact that Youtube is total fail when it comes to live performances of bands. You can not judge a band based on a live performance on that site. You can only record so well as a random fan with a little camera.
Finally, bear in mind that Syrenn is still a new band and the music can only grow from here. Take into account, the work that she has put out is far better than most bands that are just starting out. Personally, I see a lot of potential and I recommend for everyone to come check her out before they make judgement based on this review.
