well... no. Actually they don't .... not yet at least.
But they are a wondrous combination of man and machine...
What constitutes a cyborg? Do simple machines count?
Would you augment? why? why not?
What limbs or bits would you have augmented?
Would you hire yourself out as a contract killer to get the latest super duper third party mod kits in the height of bad ass cyberpunkified style? Would you wear leather, latex, or practical kevlar in the carrying out of these duties?
What social issues would arise from mass augmentation? (I feel a GiTS thread coming on)

In the meantime how about some TELESCOPE EYES?

It's funny... I watched some of the original "cyborg", today... Col. Steve Austin.

The show is so 70's, it hurts, but this episode has everything... Oscar Goldman, Dr. Rudy Wells, Bigfoot, Jamie Sommers, etc.

And then there's the book it was based on.

I don't even think about "cyborgs." I don't understand why anyone would.

Are we discussing cybernetics or actual cyborgs? Huge difference. One is an industry and one is juvenile fantasy.

And do pacemakers, stents, insulin pumps and artificial hearts even fall under the heading of "cybernetics?"

from wiki:

Quote:
"According to some definitions of the term, the metaphysical and physical attachments humanity has with even the most basic technologies have already made them cyborgs.[4] In a typical example, a human fitted with a heart pacemaker or an insulin pump (if the person has diabetes) might be considered a cyborg, since these mechanical parts enhance the body's "natural" mechanisms through synthetic feedback mechanisms. Some theorists cite such modifications as contact lenses, hearing aids, or intraocular lenses as examples of fitting humans with technology to enhance their biological capabilities; however, these modifications are no more cybernetic than would be a pen, a wooden leg, or the spears used by chimps to hunt vertebrates.[5] Cochlear implants that combine mechanical modification with any kind of feedback response are more accurately cyborg enhancements."

cyborg is generally defined as a combination of synthetic and organic, and, yes, pacemakers definately qualify. what part of the 'juvenile fantasy' that you're taking about isn't now reality? artificial hands (a la star wars) aren't there yet, but we're getting there quickly. even androids are becoming reality with the korean advent of EVE-1, or whatever shes called. it hardly qualifies as fantasy if there are production models in existence, if you ask me. even 'artificial intelligence' exists. and has, for a long time. just because sentience has yet to arrise in machines doesn't mean it never will. humans are little more than biological machines, and we obtained sentience somewhere along the line...
