Michael Zennie of Indiana Daily Student reports that Bloomington, Indiana police arrested a Warsaw, Indiana man for murder after he allegedly stabbed the lead singer of the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based hardcore/thrash band Useless Wooden Toys to death at a house party early Saturday (June 21).

Officers arrested Brian P. White (see police photo below), 32, for stabbing Christopher A. Johnson, 32, of Minneapolis, after a fight occurred shortly before 5 a.m. at 1920 N. Arlington Road, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release.

The altercation began when the two got into a fist fight after White grabbed a woman's buttocks at a house party at the Arlington Road residence. A short time later, White came out of the house and stabbed Johnson in the chest, the report said.

I was confused too, until I followed the link to the band's myspace page.

The irony is that after subjecting dozens (or maybe even hundreds) of people to their horrible horrible "music", without ever being stabbed to death by an irate audience member, the guy got offed by some random ass-grabber at a house party.

It's unacceptable to use the word ironic to describe mere unfortunate coincidences or surprising disappointments that suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly.

The question is; is it ironic that a member of the band Useless Wooden Toys was killed by a Useful Metal Object

Author: rskm1 [ Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:24 am ]
Post subject:

Well, now I'm confused again. Shit.

But it still seems like amplifying THAT sound in front of a crowd of people who were likely to have been drinking, and probably paid to be there, is equivalent to wearing a T-shirt that says "please stab me to death right here on stage".

And then, sticking up for some girl at a house party in Indiana (which you'd normally expect might get you laid), actually ended up being the thing that got him stabbed.

...don'tcha think?

NO.

irony would be him finding a use for said wooden toy. (from: 5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this)

and rskm's apparent thinking that this is irony because he doesn't care for the music is entirely bewildering and downright stupid.

i - ro - ny -- the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning, as in Useless Wooden Toys. Of course, now I have to explain the joke. The first thing I thought of was a wooden-handled weapon. Not at all useless and certainly not a toy.

Christ. You're the sort of people that would respond to a joke with, "But that's not funny because ducks can't talk."

yes, it is irony, on several levels. of course, because the term irony has many denotations, something does not have to meet each one of the categorically to be "ironic".

FTR, PBR hats are not ironic, merely douchey.

Your absolutely right. What I originally thought was a funny joke turned out not to be, and for that I apologise.
