Post What's Kickstarter worthy?
So, What is Kickstarter worthy?

Is it a "let's throw a gob at the wall and see what sticks" thing, where all whims should be Kickstarter campaigns?

Is there a limit? Should Kickstarter campaigners stick a licked finger in the air before they kick off, to make sure there's some crowd there to fund them??

What say you?

Well, kickstarter.com has standards.
http://www.kickstarter.com/help/guidelines

If what you had in mind doesn't fit those criteria, there's always gofundme.com
http://www.gofundme.com/how-to-fundraise/

Seems like both of them kind of ARE "finger in the air to gauge interest" sorts of things...

How about your personal philosophy Rob? Ever see a Kickstarter effort that met the rules of the site, but just seemed a little lacking somehow? Maybe unworthy of this type of funding?

What comes to mind is pseudo-goth millionaire Amanda Palmer's goofy Kickstarter campaign.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/c ... andal.html

She received over 1 million dollars, and then asked musicians to play with her, unpaid. After the controversy received a lot of press she the decided to pay the musicians. But the fact remains that she would not have if this scammy kickstarter thing she did hand't become a news story.

Nasty... but she must have had some inkling that her Kickstarter campaign had legs before kickoff. Just makes me wonder what fraction of people think they'll succeed and what number are truly just throwing spaghetti and hoping for a nice surprise.

Not on kickstarter, but then, I don't usually go out LOOKING for things to throw money at.

I've seen things like Android apps written by small teams and hobbyists, that raised funds through kickstarter campaigns, and were then completed and released. Kickstarter contributors got a "return on their investment" in the form of a free copy of the released game, or in-game perks, or even the ability to influence development or name some in-game items after themselves. That seems like a pretty good use of it; much like how startup companies look for investors, but on a smaller and wider scale.
