...yeah, it's me. I'm sure I know a fair number of you already, but I'm also sure I don't know a whole lot of others of you. So, Hi.

I live in St. Paul. I like bones. I work in a museum, which is not half as gothy as it sounds when you say it like that. (It's the Minnesota Science Museum.) You might have met me on LiveJournal, or at a club in the Twin Cities, or at someone's party. Or, not. It's extremely unlikely that we went to high school together.

Post subject: A Story.

true story:
long ago in a land not far enough away, there was an angry little girl.

I learned to love science fiction because I have two older brothers who had to hide their stacks of paperbacks in their closets, or my stepmother would have taken them and thrown them away. (she now lives happily in a rambling old house in upstate NY without television or processed foods or commercially printed t-shirts, just the way she likes. We can be happy for her.) thus it came to be that I read more P.K. Dick and Harlan Ellison before the age of 13 than is very healthy for a girl. Also a fair amount of Warrior Princess of Gor and that sort of bosh.

(heaven only knows what I would have turned out like if teenage boys had had an easier time finding porno mags in Fargo at that time. either they didn't have any or they hid them someplace else.)

so, I went to school in all-natural fiber clothes that I despised and was not allowed to choose, bitterly ate my no-sugar-added peanut butter on whole wheat bread sandwich that no one would trade me for, and clandestinely read thrilling tales by Sliverberg and Sturgeon when no one was looking. at least as long as I was reading something people would usually stop bothering me, so I read all the time. eventually, I got to reading encyclopedias. I'm really not exaggerating.

It was not until many many years later than I realized my stepmother was basically a hippie. She drove all the way from Fargo to St. Cloud to buy goatsmilk for us, not because we liked it, but because she thought if we just had better nutrition we'd stop being so horrible and angry all the time. never worked. prozac, mind you, hadn't been invented yet. the whole thing was like a hideous cross between Wuthering Heights and The Brady Bunch, played by a square-cut government scientist and a neurotic European crypto-hippie.

Your turn.
