Post Visioneers and other films.
If you guys haven't seen it yet, I would suggest watching Visioneers.

You can find it here : http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi1878264089/

This is another film in a long line of movies criticizing the nature of our society and way of life. Which means it should be right up our respective alleys. If people aren't satisfied with the suburban, plastic, life that the corporation offers them, if they want something more from life, if they have some deep need or longing that threatens their outlook on society, then they explode.

It made me think of Brazil, an old Gilliam classic, where the crux of the film is bureaucratic control, and the dehumanization of efficiency.

It also reminded me of Network, where television, and our lust for entertainment, distraction, money, and approval, are all brought to focus as perhaps less than benevolent, but all very real. We want to be a part, a part of *something*, but so often these somethings that we crave are parasitic. Like cigarettes.

There are a ton of others, though, and I think we should round them up. What movies have you seen, recent or old, that do a particularly good job criticizing our way of life, as Americans or Humans?

Too many of these sorts of movies, and the people that make them are typically perfectly satisfied with the way of life the money they make from these movies affords them.

It's just entertainment. I love Brazil but I certainly didn't walk away from it thinking it was more than a fun thing to watch.

Leave it to the Zomster to be contrarian just for the sake of it. Blech.

Aaaaaaanywaaaay....

I only recently saw Network for the first time. My brother has been telling me for years that it was up my alley and that I'd love it, and I finally broke down and watched the thing.

It. Was. Fantastic.

I loved the movie and just about everything about it. Outstanding performances by the cast, outstanding method of telling that story, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how forward-thinking it was. I found it creepy that it fortold the future with such brilliant accuracy.

I will check out Visioneers, thanks for the tip!

Opinions that come out of my butt are very suited to the subject of things of an ass-like nature.

I haven't seen Nowhere, but I've seen the Doom Generation, and love it deeply.

Unfortunately it's also a film I've tried to show people a number of different times, and they always turn off.

"A Completely Heterosexual Film"

I love that description.

And of course, you're right, Zom. This is all simply entertainment, and it does nothing to fix the real insanity of the world, and it really kinda makes me angry when I think about it.

But at least it's a reflection of how ugly our society has become, and I think that's valuable. We won't change anything until we're looking at how filthy we are.

DTC - a collection of somewhat antisocial people collectively antagonizing each other socially...
