I seem to remember a couple 14 year olds around this place in the past who used zeros in place of o's in their names and had terrible punctuation issues and who put stuff like o.o' and =^^= in all their posts (what are those, kitty faces or something? they are ridiculous - shadowkitty is the only person cool enough to use those). They all lasted about five minutes on this board, and I'm starting to get the sneaking suspicion that they are all the same person - I'm picturing an aging pedophile unsuccessfully using one name after another to try and pick up eighth graders.

Yes and no. Any troll is someone with too much time on their hands. Truly witty ones are truly evil, but then, a lot of trolls are really just inherently boring people who want to punish others for how miserable their own lives are.

I've never heard of this "AOL variety troll" concept - I gather that they are people who go from board to board posting irritating things to try and get people riled up, but is that all they do? Explain.

By definition, a troll is anyone who is trying to prompt a specific response either from one person in particular or a group. People can troll to irritate, or they can troll for sympathy, etc. Everyone kind of does it in some way from time to time, though some people are worse. Lenin and I have trolled the shit out of each other in the past, but we were pretty straightforward about it. It's not as bad when you're dealing with someone who has established a standing interest in contributing somehow.

The really irritating ones are random, unknown people who show up and for no apparent reason other than some grudge or sheer boredom just look to stir shit. In some places, like on usenet, a lot of the trolls are so savy and smart, they're real motherfuckers. A good one will literally irritate everyone, become the center of attention and drive people to stop reading the forum. The generally accepted best way to deal with trolls is to simply ignore them though ~ since they're just looking for attention. If they don't get it, they'll get bored and wander away.

I guess I used "AOL variety troll" in reference to juvenile-acting trolls who don't come across as too bright. Like the fourteen year old that wanders into an atheist board and starts throwing around "Jesus will save you!!" even though he doesn't even go to church himself, or someone who would wander onto a goth board, claim to be a kid named Vlad who hates his parents.

This person was trying to offend us ~ though when everyone simply rolled their eyes, they wandered off because we didn't give them what they wanted.
