"erm" is used in all the Harry Potter books. That makes it a word! :P

I actually think it's the British version of "umm". *shrug* But I'm not a Brit, so I don't know for sure.

This poor newbie isn't responding to the thread that is actually about them. Oh well, on to more important matters.
I'm not sure what I think of 'erm' but I guess it's ok. I'm sort of a fan of 'ahem' but that's used more when politely trying to gain everyone's attention before speaking. 'erm' sounds a little unsure of oneself and sheepish to me. I suggest trying 'ahem' on for size - it's a little more forceful without being too overconfident or imposing.

"erm" and "ahem" aren't really interchangeable, though, the way "erm", "hmm", "umm", and "uhh" are.
Consider:
"<i><b>erm</b>, my butt itches</i>"
versus
"<i><b>ahem</b>, my butt itches</i>"
The first one is just inane babbling, but when you prefix it with "ahem", you're kind of implying that you expect the listener to DO something about it.
As in, "<i><b>ahem</b>, my butt itches. (aren't you supposed to be scratching it?!)</i>".
That's totally NOT the same thing as just "<i><b>erm</b>, my butt itches. (remind me to buy some ointment)</i>".

That is so funny! OMG! I think from now on, when I'm at work, I'm going to use "ahem" instead of " umm".

but an even newernewbie is. how's that work?
anywho, i use <i>erm</i> quite a bit. more... <i>refined</i> than "ummm". i always have a cow and kud (is that how you spell it?) come to mind at "ummm" but maybe i'm just raised in an odd household...
