"Similar Publications". Like what, National Enquirer?
I recently looked at a few Wiki pages on subjects that I'm very familiar with and found several errors immediately.
One I just found is this:
Notable patients of Sarno include radio personality Howard Stern, the late actress Anne Bancroft
It's Anne Bancroft, Arctic explorer who is a patient of Dr. Sarno, not a dead actress. Geeeez.
And the rock-related stuff is terribly inaccurate. Sorry, but I'll stick to sorting through several sources, not relying on just The Internets Standard, Dr. Future.

I'm guessing this is probably accurate as a snapshot, but wikkis probably overall have more errors, but they get fixed. Citing some errors and not fixing them isn't helping.
P.S. Dr. Sarno's entry does read Notable patients of Sarno include radio personality Howard Stern, the Arctic explorer Anne Bancroft
I love wikkis.

Sarno's wiki page still says:
Notable patients
Notable patients of Sarno include radio personality Howard Stern, the late actress Anne Bancroft[5], 20/20 co-anchor John Stossel[7][8] and television writer Janette Barber.[7] All four have praised Sarno and his work highly.[9][10] Stern dedicated his first book in part to Sarno.[11] [edit]
Anyways, it sometimes may be good for some facts, but I'm not counting on Wikipedia to have an accurate portrayal of something like Punk Rock.

Actually, what's quite funny is someone corrected my edit. Then I did a little research.
Anne Bancroft, the late actress who died of uterine cancer, is indeed the same Bancroft who pimped Sarno. Not the arctic explorer.
Now I'm way of topic. But I agree with your comment on punk.
In fact, any "concept" as opposed to historical fact will suck in any reference context as it is life in a holier-than-thow world that creates genres cultures and subcultures.

Now you should probably read-up on punk.

...by relaying what they learned from Wikipedia?
The great thing about Wikipedia is not that it's "always correct" (since it's not, duh; it's a dynamically-evolving collaborative repository), but that it has a very strict policy about only containing FACTUAL information.
As opposed to opinions from people who may have skewed perspectives.
Which makes it a better source of information than... oh, for example, you.

It's quick and easy for things that can be determined to be Fact or Fiction, but when it comes to Artistic things and opinions, I don't trust it.
From your favourite source:
A goth is a person who listens to gothic rock music. Goths often wear black clothes and unusual jewelry. Both goth men and goth women often wear make-up. Goth came from the word Gothic which actually means gloomy or dark. People who call themselves a Goth are those who live up the meaning of the name through anything that may represent death such as those with the color black, deathly white, bloody red. Goth people also make and listen to Goth music.
I guess that's all there is to Goth. Glad to have the knowledge.

The Goths (Gothic: , Gutans) were East Germanic tribes who, in the 3rd and 4th centuries, harried the Roman Empire and later adopted Arianism (a form of Christianity) while some subsequently accepted Islam in the later centuries.[1] In the 5th and 6th centuries, divided as the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths, they established powerful successor-states of the Roman Empire in the Iberian peninsula and Italy, respectively.

I just don't see anything remotely Punk (or rebellious, shocking, refreshing or whatnot) regarding a fashion that is more akin to weird dudes doing Civil War reenactments, albeit with a H.G. Wells slant.
I would say that it's a very minor fantasy escapism thing, much like the ill-fated New Romantics that immediately followed the death of Punk.
I do understand the sad use of the tag -punk on the end of this sort of thing, as wrong and dumb as it is.

I have personally see this band and they are more punk than any pussy ass foppish steampunk
They even have steam powered amplifiers
With names like Count Bassie, Duc D L'stortion and Lord Bendover there is no doubt that we deserve our position beneath such noble rockers
Check out such songs as
"Friend of a friend of the working class"
"Beauty Spot"
"Highfalutin"
and my favorite(s)
"I've got my ascot n my dickie"
and one of the cruelest songs ever
"Little rickshaw boy"

So how do you get tracktion for one of these "_______"-punk movements? Do you have to start a physical trend? Or is this something, where you can create an imaginary world online, and then hope that it'll "take" at some point in the empirical world?
I've got really high hopes for starting the "bookpunk" movement... there won't be music; they'll just be awkward silence, boots, and books!

I just went to the Abney Park myspace, listened to their tracks and looked at their media
The only remarkable things I can say about the music is that it didn't sound like straight out dance music (one of my aversions in the world of electronics) and they didn't make me wanna shut it off immediately
Pretty disappointed that there is no drummer
As far as their media is concerned
The bass and guitar are kinda cool but the violin looks really cool with the power tubes
I give them the most credit for finding a sub culture to exploit that hasn't been sucked dry yet
I have not seen many steampunks
However, this band seems to be very formula in their application
It's a bit too slick for me and the music lacks the chaos needed to add the word "punk" to your name
I know they're not Steampunk but Rasputina did this so much better
Maybe not as over the top with the image but the music was far superior to Abney Park
Rockula! Says-
Abney Park didn't piss me off so they don't suck

Oh, and there are some cool movies that I might put into this genre. Most notably is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I loved that film. Also, I wonder if Dark City fits in to this genre... Very good movie as well.

What is being called "Punk" in this day and age is certainly wrong and dumb.
Real Punk from 76-78 or so is not wrong or dumb.
But pretending to live in some fantasy non-era of huge brass machinery and other spurious science is transcendently stupid.

Other anime... Howl's Moving Castle (even though the machines were powered by magic), Sakura Wars, some of the episodes of Robot Carnival.
Regular movies... City of Lost Children, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Young Sherlock Holmes... others... Stardust, as a movie was fashioned more steamy than the fantasy of the book.

Weird how I was just gonna post here because I watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow last night Yeah, I know, it has HUGE holes in the logic I can swallow a WWII fighter plane that travels underwater but not the fact that it can fly half way around the world on one tank of gas None of that matters I want to explore this type of imagery further because it looks great on a 40 foot video screen They had a Steampunk event here at the Dallas version of the Saloon and all they could think of was to play "City of Lost Children" all night Imagine my frustration at having to see the the DVD menu on screen for 5 minutes before I told the DeeJay to press play again zom-zom wrote: [Real Punk from 76-78 or so is not wrong or dumb.

You and I both see eye to eye on most trend hating because all it usually takes is to go to Hot Topic and buy the costume Although the steampunk trend does seem to present a uniform familiarity as well, it does take a considerable amount of effort and imagination A lot more than a corset and some tights with bats on them Besides, someone needs to balance out the babydoll-goth-dreads thing Not saying I hate it but there's no shortage of that style in every city At least the Steampunk thing is a deviation from the same old goth

 Re: What is Steampunk?
I haven't seen any innovation or genuine creativity. What I have seen and heard is trendoids taking the usual same-old and painting it over with a sepia-toned finish and other antiquing.
Adding brass pipes and gears to already-existing plastic technology to make it look like it came out of The Time Machine or something doesn't take much creative effort at all. Throw some old wood and brass on there and voila, it's Steam-Punked.
And the music.. Abney Park et al, absolutely nothing new or innovative. And I know I keep bringing it up, but the Ibanez electrics festooned with brass gears and shit.. at least build or have someone build a unique guitar for you if you're going to use standard rock band instrumentation.
But hey, if you like to wear knickers and goggles, you go right ahead.

Not at all, unless you mean sad in the best of Goth terms. This "steampunk" trend, it is a very weak and silly thing.
So, do you play a lot of "steampunk" music as a DJ?
Has it made an impact on the dancefloor?

Has it made an impact on the dancefloor? I was just trying to get your goat, you didn't bite (fucker) Actually I rarely play steam punk. The Midnight Muse Review burlesque show likes it and I've played it during their shows, but that's about it. It's much bigger in the South and out West.

there's a show about steampunk on Tpt Life [ch 2] right now. i don't really think i like the style, but the show is interesting. there was a guy who does a lot of steampunk style crafts/projects. they had music, fashion, history, etc. it was a show called Make and it usually runs all weekend.

I am curious now. Aside from the attire of performer, what differentiates steampunk music from any other music? I looked it up on youtube, there didn't seem to be a steam organ involved.
It reminded me of Tea Party.

 Re: What is Steampunk?
It seems to be more of a style and feeling rather than any particular instrument. What I've heard has a kind of dark carnival feel to it.
Wikipedia is not very helpful, it says: ""Steampunk music" is even less defined, as Caroline Sullivan says in The Guardian, "internet debates rage about exactly what constitutes the SP sound." This can be heard in the work of artists such as Abney Park, Unextraordinary Gentlemen, and Vernian Process"

 Re: What is Steampunk?
I would say music that is based on Western and Eastern European folk music, excluding Irish music. Western folk music is based more on a progressing melody rather than a riff and a pentatonic harmony.
Of course, all European folk has had a give-and take with jazz for the past 60 or so years.
Another way to put it, it's a neo-folk movement based on non-Celtic European folk music.

I disagree with this only because there is and has been a very active neo-folk scene for quite a few years that is based on this sort of music, but without the silly Wild Wild West costumes and imagery. This "genre" is not about music, it's about fashion. And while there's nothing wrong with that, some fashion (like the Blitz Kids / New Romantics ) is really laughable. At least the New Romantic scene produced some great and memorable music.

I disagree with this only because there is and has been a very active neo-folk scene for quite a few years that is based on this sort of music, but without the silly Wild Wild West costumes and imagery. the "steampunk" label comes from science fiction, particularly a book by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling The Difference Engine. Se also Neil Stephenson't The Diamond Age. The ridiculous fashion comes from none other than Rasputina, who other than instrumentation, really are on the fringe of this supposed "genre". I know that both the neo-folk and gypsy-rock/punk scenes have been going for awhile. And, just like most genres, the fashion has nothing to do with the music. Beirut, Magnetic fields- very douche-free bands. But hey, without some inane clothing and a really expensive haircut, no one is going to know that you're part of a "scene", right?

From a fashion standpoint, i will have to say I enjoy seeing what new costumes people can come up with. But music....i just want to take an impact driver to my temple....

Huh... there seems to be a mix of neat machinery, and people wearing stupid fancy clothes. I'm not very clear on how this all goes together. I was really hoping that puffy shirts, top hats, and canes would be let go... but now they're back with a vengeance.
Oh, and 90s rivetheads called, they want their gears and goggles back.

And the foofy clothes are really part of the "theme"-- it's how turn-of-the-century and victorian-era peeps probably would've envisioned the future. THEIR version of Star Trek wouldn't have any friggin spandex unitards in it, they'd be wearing pantaloons and bustiers and sh*t.
