Those clocks are like most of the "steampunk" accessories and such that I've seen.

A bunch of old junk parts placed around something to make it look old or From A Forgotten Time. You take a cheap Chinese-made battery-powered clock movement and pile old parts of things around it and sell it for $500. It's inherently still a cheap clock.

I'm annoyed by the lack of knowledge of period costuming. Which is not a surprise, I'm just posting this in case there's a bet going.

"25+ year old science fiction genre called, and they want their genre back"

Next we'll be seeing fashion based on UK LeGuin's Earthsea works.

At least, I hope those are all snaps.
Because if they're buttons, you'd get friggin' carpal tunnel just getting dressed & undressed.

Yeah, but if they are snaps you can rip it off and bare your skinny, pale chest! Then snap it up and do it again.

Aren't internet avatars suppose to hide these types of things from the public?

snob snob snob

The movie looks cool and will look cool if you project it on a screen
If I didn't like something because it was atrocious then I never would go to a Thought Thieves show
ha ha ha
Of course the "graphic novel" is better
I'm sure every film's original graphic novel was better

Guess what they have to compromise to get all of those multi-million dollar special effects?

i know what they compromised for that one.

characters.

plot.

commentary on the inherent imperialism and racism of 19th century british society.

and, sadly for a dumb comic book movie, any sort of action or sense of adventure.

Luckily, I get to look at films as source material insted of on their individual artistic merit
I am starting to get a fair amount of material now that would support a steampunk evening
and the whole night doesn't have to be sticking "Sky Captain" in the DVD player and hitting ''play" when you see the menu pop up in the middle of the evening

Anyone???

It's a goddamn shame that there aren't really any good steampunk movies. A few things dabble in the genre, but by and large they suffer from egregious plot holes or terrible situation-driven action sequences. LXG is probably the worst offender.

There are a few books that qualify pretty well - the actual League comics are quite good, Stephenson's "Diamond Age" sort of qualifies, but the Stephenson/Gibson "The Difference Engine" is probably the best example. Other than that, most of the genre is so fashion- and style-driven that I get frustrated with the lack of social realism. Gears don't make steampunk. The philosophy of technical progress in a non-progressive world, that makes the genre for me. The clockwork and corsets are just the trappings.

Just about everything I have read of the genre (which, admittedly, isn't a lot), has these same failings, plus hideous technical ineptitude on the part of authors, plus the odd compulsion to use the word "steam" a lot, whether it makes sense in the context or not.

People attempting to create steampunk lit should at least read Verne sometime...

Post Re: What is Steampunk?
i never got into steampunk really. one reason was that i didn't want to pay like $200 for a costume. and also, the outfits look more like costumes then real out and about clothing.

Also i never really felt that steampunk really reached out with an artistic message. Not like cyberpunk. I feel like steampunk sits in the background and looks cool rather than haveing real artistic meaning. Where as cyberpunk is what orginaly drew me to cybergoth clothing. Cyberpunk just explores so many ideas that are meaningful today (super coporations ruling rather than goverments, AI and what life really is, the dangers of a transhumanistic society, and how technology is taking over our lives).

Steampunks literature really hasn't a lot of merit in todays society (witht the execption of Frankenstein, which doesn't seem all that steampunk) its concepts are all too dated and cannot break anymore ground. Also modern steampunk authors are trying really hard to write a genre peice, and thats usually is a formula for failure. Also why a lot of steampunk movies suck.

I guess to me, steampunk seems more like an aesthetics or fashion statement (but no one wears it like normal clothing), something you tack on to things to make them cooler, rather than a full feldged sub-genre. Frankenstein and other "steampunk literature" where really just really old science fiction and really stand up on their own without their own subgenre.

and i really don't see how it can really evolve. it seems the things that define it also constrict it too much. It seems too easy to define.

Yeah i suppose, but still i don't have the money for massive amounts of clock parts and copper tubing. and good top hats are really expesive! Its just that i've noticed that websites with charge like $100 more for painting cyber goggles bronze.

I do make my own cyber accessories, but all i have to do is break open really old electronics.

I agree the genre is more about spectacle and theatricality than others. That's what I like about it; it's *not* everyday clothing, nor should it be!
As for affordability, I've seen good goggles made from flashlights, clothing made from leather scraps from the bargain bin at S.R.Harris, and (my favorite) a mechanical arm made from Wonderflex, a bra and metallic paint.
Having Amble's, S.R.Harris and Ax-Man in the metro area is truly a blessing for piecemeal costumers.

I am surprised to learn that cyberpunk had deep-rooted philosophical influence. Is this your own interpretation, or is that a wide-spread ideology?

I'd encourage you to give The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson a try - I think it captures a good feeling of steam punk without bashing you over the head with it or sacrificing the story. It's become a favorite of mine.

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Age-Illus ... 533&sr=1-1

Personally, I like the steam punk look but it doesn't match my lifestyle - I can imagine it would be rather clunky to wear all those brass bits to work...

i read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld it was like "yeah its mech powered by steam i get it, you don't have to shove every old timey science word in your vocabulary down my throat to describe it." it just tried way too hard.

it does look cool, and i am very impressed by some of the stuff people cook up. but as a whole, steampunk never really intrigued me.

I'm not hardcore Steampunk *by far*, so this opinion is mine own: I don't think Steampunk needs to have some overarching ideology. Steampunk deals in imagination, escapism, pageantry, alt-future-time, mechanics, nostalgia, costumery and definitely exhibitionism. "When Goths discovered brown", indeed. It's so true!

I still love it! And I'm glad to discuss it, or other fashion genres. Philosophy or no, I'm a Goth all about the clothes.

Thank you. Indeed it does,. Working at the cotton mill at 8 years old was dreadful. The beatings, the disease, rats, lice.
Why anyone would want to relive those wretched days is beyond me.

It's one of the dumbest looking fashion trends to have come along. The music sucks.

The one Steampunk band I saw at CONvergence 2009 did have a keyboard tricked out to look like a mechanical organ. They were called "Lemming Malloy" for some reason; but the lead singer was cute. Which is all that ever really matters.

There are a few "Steampunk" bands, like Abney Park. It's such a restrictive and silly genre for artistic expression.

There are a few "Steampunk" bands, like Abney Park. It's such a restrictive and silly genre for artistic expression.

Which is why you have to be cute. ;)

I know you won't expect this from me of all people, but I really liked this post. Well put.

And thosquanta's zom zing was classic as well. I need to read this thread more often!

Does this mean Steampunk is now mainstream? Dead? Can we move onto dieselpunk now? Ooh--or Nanopunk! Elfpunk? (I wiki-ed those last two)
